The National Cyber Security Centre has launched a free online tool to help small businesses assess how resilient they are to cyberattacks. The ‘Exercise in a Box’ tool provides exercises based on the main cyber-threats and enables users to assess how they would respond to an attack.

EU agrees minimum rights for gig economy

The EU has announced minimum rights for workers in casual or short-term employment in the gig economy. Employers will be required to provide gig economy workers with information about working conditions on their first working day and any probationary periods will be limited to six months. To qualify for these rights, workers must work on average three hours per week and 12 hours every four weeks.

New rules on payslips for employees and workers

From 6 April 2019 all employees and workers, including agency workers and those on zero-hours contracts, must receive a written, printed or electronic payslip. The payslips must be itemised and include specific information including a breakdown of the hours worked, the gross and net salary and the amounts deducted and the reasons why.

Making Tax Digital for VAT now in force

From 1 April 2019, most VAT-registered businesses in the UK with a turnover above £85,000 must sign up to keep and file digital records following the introduction of Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT. HMRC figures have revealed that 100,000 businesses have already signed up to use the new service. HMRC has confirmed that it will take a light touch approach to issuing penalties for non-compliance as long as a business takes reasonable steps to comply with the new MTD requirements.
